چکیده
The IGPL community and the Editorial Board deeply regrets the untimely death of Professor Jon Barwise on Sunday March 5th of this year. His departure is a great loss, not only to his family and friends and the international logic community, but also to the historical evolutionary development of logic itself. Professor Barwise’s contribution in the areas of pure and applied logic, his active participation in all aspects of the logic community; his visionary ideas, his reasearch, teaching and organisation have earned him a unique place in logic in the 20th century. We feel emotionally compelled to leave Professor Barwise’s name on the front cover of the Journal until the end of the year. Blessed be his memory

“[T]o a greater or lesser degree, every scientific advance marks some departure from the common sense that preceded it.” These words of Irving M. Copi (1979: 195) seem to summarize the nature of Vicious Circles in the most concise fashion. Following the steps of Aczel’s (1988) ground-breaking monograph which marked a departure from the “common sense” that is attributed to classical set theory, ...
متن کاملThree old pieces
This contribution consists of three pieces that are independent of each other. The first one recalls an expedition into Swedish Lapland undertaken by Johan and myself 25 year ago and is mainly picturesque, the second one is a remark to Johan’s 1972 Master’s Thesis centering around a new equivalent of the Prime Ideal Theorem, and the final one is a short proof of the Boundedness Theorem that is ...
متن کاملGraphical effects in learning logic: reasoning, representation and individual differences
Hyperproof is a computer program created by Barwise and Etchemendy for teaching logic using multimodal graphical and sentential methods, inspired by their theories of heterogeneous reasoning (Barwise and Etchemendy 1994). Elsewhere, we have proposed a theory of the cognitive impact of assigning information to different modalities (Stenning and Oberlander 1992). Our view is that where diagrams a...
